Clinical Strategy. What is it?
As in any other profession dependent on cognitive performance, to perform their job well, physicians must rely on deductive reasoning skills to problem-solve clinical scenarios.
A small minority understands this from day 1 of medical school. These few actively expand their diagnostic skillset with every patient encounter, case presentation, and clinical vignette. But unfortunately, the majority of the medical world, including seasoned attending physicians, may go through their whole medical careers relying on heuristics, “first aid medicine,” and mnemonics as shortcuts for thinking in lieu of sound logical deduction to reach solutions.
Clinical reasoning - which I like to refer to as the “Dark Matter” in the medical world of knowledge - is not some theoretical or nebulous concept, but rather, a tangible, teachable, and essential element of clinical practice that serves as glue holding together thousands of concepts which would otherwise be useless without a platform for application.
